      Various Names of Pearls:
In Sanskrit, pearls are known as Mukta, Mauktika, Shuktij, and Induratna. In Urdu, they are called Murabid, and in English, they are simply known as Pearls.

      Physical Properties:
Pearl is not a mineral but an organic composition. Its hardness ranges from 3 to 4, and its specific gravity lies between 2.60 and 2.89.

      Types and Origin of Pearls:

Pearls have been valued as precious gems since ancient times. Since they are biological creations, their origin is linked to living beings. According to ancient Indian beliefs, pearls are classified into eight types based on their origin:

1.Gajamukta (Elephant Pearl): These pearls are said to form on the foreheads of elephants born under Punya or Shravan Nakshatra on a Monday or Sunday. They are round and large, resembling gooseberries. This rare pearl is believed to bring great fortune.

      2. Sarp Mukta (Snake Pearl): Formed in the hood of snakes, particularly the Basuki caste, this blue and luminous pearl, also known as Naagmani, is said to bring wealth and fulfill desires.

      3. Abhramukta or Meghmukta (Cloud Pearl): This yellow, radiant pearl is believed to fall from clouds during rainstorms in Punya or Shravan Nakshatra. Possessing this pearl is said to attract endless treasures and fulfill all wishes.

      4. Bamboo Mukta (Bamboo Pearl): Found inside bamboo trees, this green, plum-shaped pearl is considered highly valuable and believed to grant wealth and prosperity.

      5. Shukar Mukta (Boar Pearl): Found in the brains of pigs from twelve specific lineages, this round, shiny, yellowish pearl is believed to bring good fortune to its owner.

      8. Shukti Mukta (Oyster Pearl): Found in oysters, especially during Swati Nakshatra, these pearls are the most common and are available in various shapes and colors, including white and light yellow.

      Birth Story of Shell Pearls:
Pearls are formed by a small aquatic creature from the "mussel" species. This snail-like creature, living inside a shell, secretes a mixture of lime carbonate and other hard substances, which solidify and form pearls over time.

      Pearl Shapes:
Pearls come in various shapes like round, oval, pear-shaped, and irregular. A perfectly round pearl is considered the most valuable.

      Pearl Colors:
Pearls are available in different colors, including white, black, yellow, blue, pink, red, brown, and green. The best pearls are those with a light pink glow.

      Caution in Use:
Pearls are softer than other gems and can be easily scratched or broken. They are also susceptible to damage from acids and body sweat. Over time, due to the decay of biological parts, pearls may become useless.

      Testing for Real Pearls:
Several methods can be used to test if a pearl is real or fake:
      1. Rubbing a pearl in paddy husk—if it shines more, it's real.
      2. Placing it in burnt ghee—if it melts, it's real.
      3. Dropping it in water—if rays are visible, it's real.
      4. Leaving it in cow's urine overnight—if it remains whole, it's real.
